NATO Symbols

Learn the NATO military symbols used to identify ground units, air-defense systems, and other threats in DCS.

How to read a NATO-style symbol

A symbol is a compact map label, not a picture of the unit. The frame identifies the domain, the affiliation convention identifies who it belongs to, and the interior icon or attached modifier narrows the function. These graphics are NATO-style reference symbols; exact rendering can vary between map tools and game interfaces.

Frame
Domain such as ground, air, or maritime.
Affiliation
Friendly, hostile, neutral, or unknown convention.
Icon
The unit, capability, or equipment represented.
Modifier
An added mark that changes or qualifies the base symbol.
